「屈機」的 英文

(current/news) English--潮語「屈機」的 英文翻譯

最近有機會與語言文字學泰斗何文匯教授和在大學唸中文的梁家權先生聊天，談到香港年輕一代常用的「潮語」。梁先生覺得編輯一本「潮語書」可能有「市 場」。我馬上搭訕說，我把潮語用英語表達，應該可以增加銷量吧！於是，席上有人問「屈機」英文是甚麼？我說「屈機」可以是動詞，他「屈我機」才贏了比賽 （He wins by adopting unfair practices）或者是（He wins by using loop- holes in the system）。「屈機」也可當形容詞，例如：這個遊戲規則真是「屈機」（I have zilch opportunity in winning the game due to unfair rules）。「屈」這個字源自《孫子兵法》的（謀攻篇）：「不戰而屈人之兵」。現代比較容易明白的漢語是「屈曲機制」去取勝。

    " 「屈機」指玩遊戲者因無力取勝而屈服。"
    屈機 may have nothing to do with unfair practices and loop-holes.

    For example, P masters a subject extremely well and scores highly in the examination, other classmates may say 佢真係屈哂機.

    屈機 here simply means that P and others have had "unequal powers to compete".

    It would be quite unfair to say that by mastering the subject so well P has adopted any unfair practices.
    It would also be odd to say that allowing P to take the examination implies the existence of a loop-hole in the examination system.

    Afterall, "unequal" and "unjust" are not quite the same thing.
