The Hong Kong Journalists Association (香港記者協會) celebrates (慶祝) its 43rd anniversary
I was invited to The Hong Kong Journalists Association’s (香港記者協會) 43rd anniversary gala dinner on May 20 by a good friend of mine, Sharon Cheung, senior vice-president of E-sun (a member of the Lai Sun Group). She is founder of a popular free movie website “goyeah.com” in Hong Kong. She was a reporter in the SCMP when I was deputy chief editor there not too long ago. During the dinner, I shared jokes and small talks (聊天) with many acquaint-ants (好友) including Chip Tso, a renowned columnist and broadcaster; Lai Ting-yiu (Sing Tao Group director); Willy Lam (China expert, educator and author); Li Yee (Apple Daily senior executive); Clement So (dean of the Journalism School at CUHK) and Cheung Kwok Leung (RTHK senior producer). There were also two young but promising journalists on my table, who will help fight for Hong Kong’s press freedom in the next 30 years. They were Ryan Law (deputy news editor of Apple Daily) and Kenneth Dai (chief news editor of Am730).
Every guest would take home a bottle (註1) of salt, which resembles (比擬) the evening’s spirit: “journalists are paid poorly but we keep on doing our job with dignity” (我地有尊嚴). (see 註2)
My fellow newsmen and newswomen, I am proud of you!
Dean Fung
